Five Houston Police Officers were shot in southeast Houston Monday afternoon after an “encounter with a suspect.”
The incident occurred at about 5 p.m., according to police, in the Pecan Park neighborhood, near Harding St. and Fennell.
HPD officials have not yet released details about the incident, but confirmed five officers had been shot. Their conditions are not known at this time.
According to law enforcement sources, one of the wounded officers was shot in the face. The incident occurred after the officers — from the Narcotics Division — were serving a warrant, sources said.
A law enforcement source told the Chronicle narcotics officers had previously made undercover purchases at that location and were able to get a warrant to enter the house and search it.
The officers were at the door of the location when gunfire erupted from within, the source said.
“We have had several officers shot please pray for officers on the way to the scene now more information to follow,” Acevedo wrote, in a tweet posted shortly after the shooting. He has since headed to the hospital along with dozens of other law enforcement officers from HPD and other agencies.
A suspect is reported dead at the scene, according to HPD, as a host of officers, medical personnel and others swarmed the site of the incident. Another suspect remains barricaded at the scene, according to a law enforcement source.
Two LifeFlight helicopters could be seen landing in the area, as ambulances rushed other officers to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center.
Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement offering whatever help was needed to bring those responsible for the shooting to justice.
“This evening’s horrific attack on police officers is a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe,” he said, in the statement. “I ask all Texans to join Cecilia and me in praying for the officers injured, and for the continued safety of all law enforcement officers who protect our communities.”
Three Houston Police Department officers have been killed in the line of duty from 2006 to 2017, according to FBI data.
The FBI’s Law Enforcement Officers Killed & Assaulted reports show two HPD officers were shot in the line of duty, while the third in 2015 was struck and killed by a vehicle.
